International Conference on Improving the Transparency of Supply Chains for Organic Agricultural and Food Products

The NAAU delegation headed by Chairman Viktor Goritsky took part in the International Conference “Improving Integrity of Organic Production Chains,” held on September 21-22 in Odessa with support of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.

The conference was attended by 170 participants – key representatives from organic production and distribution chains and the organic sector, competent authorities, control bodies and consumers from 14 countries, including Ukraine, the EU, Switzerland and the USA. The conference was organized within the framework of the Anti-Fraud Initiative by Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), Agro Eco, GfRS (Resources Protection Society) in cooperation with International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM – Organics International) and the European Organic Certifiers Council (EOCC). The event was introduced within the framework of two Swiss-Ukrainian projects: “The development of the organic market in Ukraine” and “Consolidation of local certification bodies”, implemented with the financial support of the State Secretariat of Switzerland for Economic Affairs (SECO).

The aim of this conference  was securing and expanding Ukraine exports to Western Europe and the US by:

  • creating awareness on the import country requirements in regard to transparency and traceability of organic production and trade to improve organic integrity for products,
  • creating awareness among buyers on how to secure reliable organic products,
  • identifying cornerstones for effective controls, in particular in complex production and trade structures and improving risk oriented inspection methods
  • creating awareness for the joint responsibility (producer - trader - CB - authority) on the entire supply chain

According to the results of the conference, a joint declaration was adopted, in which the main findings of the event were recorded and the further steps were endorsed for the participants to implement in order to increase the transparency of the organic agriculture and food chain sales circle in the world.
